I am planning on building a small powder room which will extend into an existing garage space. In order to keep the floor at the same level as the rest of the house, I'll have to build up the floor abot 2 feet. The garage floor is a slab. Do I have to cantelever the floor out from the main house or can I rest the joists on the slab? What is involved in preperation for the sub floor. Obviously there will be a waste line and water lines to be extended and connected, but fortunately the garage is well protected from the elements. We do experience freezing weather during the winter so insulation will be required.

I've gotten a lot of conflicting "advice" from well meaning folks (e.g. put down plastic moisture barrier; don't put it down it will encourage mold, etc.)

Many thanks for your help

Check for stability of the slab. Movement of the slab is highly possible if the proper steps were not taken to keep the slab from floating.

This in turn can become a problem through the change of seasons.

Cantilever off of the existing structure is your best bet if it is proven that slab has the capability of being moved.
