Recently we noticed that some tiles are coming off our shower wall. Behind the tile is very wet and slimy. We're afraid of what's underneath. It's obvious that the previous owners laid the tile themselves, it is so poorly done. We have no idea where to go from here and any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Essentially, you will need to find the leak (source of the water causing this), then replace the wall.

I'm thinking the moisture that got behind the tile was from a poor caulking job. Where do I look to find out how to go about removing the tile from the wall?

What does the backing behind the tiles that fell off look like? Does it look like cement, or does it look like cardboard or wet plaster?

If it looks like concrete, then chances are that the wrong type of tile adhesive was used, and it may be possible to remove the tiles and save the walls.

If it looks like cardboard or wet plaster, then my condolences. The entire wall needs to be removed, tile and all, down to the studs.
