We are renovating an old farmhouse and are in the process of re-doing our bedroom. The floors are pre-existing red oak hardwoods. Because the renovations gave us about 3foot x 10 foot of extra floor, we have had to match the wood at the far end of the bedroom. That part has turned out fine (or will turn out fine as we did it in another room recently.) However, there is a square area that is about 3ft x 2ft in the new doorway that does not not have hardwoods as it used to be the closet.
Any suggestions on what to do here? It will be very difficult to match to the existing floor because of the layout and trying to match up the lines with such a small space right as you enter the room would llikely not look great. We are toying with different ideas (such as putting in the same wood as used on the rest of the floor but at a different angle to make it look as though it is intentionally done; my husband has also suggested tile in that spot) but are really at a loss.

Usually weaving a patch in makes it far less visible. Pieces that end at the patch are removed back into the rest of the floor. New wood is added to fill the opening in the floor and span all or part of the patch. Do it enough times and you will not be able to tell that the patch is there.

brickeye is right! I saw that done where a puppy box had been on a hardwood floor and the urine stains had gotten deep into the wood. You could not tell it wasn't original floor.
