All the molding in our house is stained a light oak. We want to put up chair rails and crown molding. Will it look Ok if we stain the chair rail to match the other molding but paint the crown molding white to match the ceiling. We have 9 foot ceilings and I don't think the oak stain would look nice on crown molding. Besides it will be hard to match the stain and the different sections of wood won't match. anglesea

Color combinations and decorating techniques are all personal preferences. Do whatever you think will look good.
Hope this helps.

It is personal preference, but there are DIY advantages to painting the crown molding over staining. 1. you can buy paint grade molding which is cheaper 2. you can fill "correct" any blunders with caulk/putty and paint 3. you can put a semigloss paint of a slightly different color or shade and have it stand out as much as stain.
