I am interested in putting a observation deck above my garage. It would be used for my telescopes and be about the size of a one car garage. Any information or links would be greatly appreciated, thanks to all!

What kind of roof does the garage have? How steep of a pitch? How big? Flatting out part of the roof, or just building a platform over the top of it? Are you in town someplace? Will your neighborhood CC&R's allow you to do such a thing? What sort of wind and snow loads would you have to meet?

WOW! Well here goes... The garage hasn't been built yet. We will be moving next spring to a new house/garage. Sight is about 30 miles west of Red Bluff, CA. Size would be about 12' X 24' above garage roof which is low pitch. Site is in the country on 40 acres with no one near. Snow and wind l will haveto check on... Thanks for reply Lefty, all things l need to know l guess.

Hey neighbor,

DO check on the snow and wind loads. In Red Bluff, the snow load is only 10 lbs, but 30 miles west that will probably change. (Going NORTH, it changes from 10# to 30# at Cottonwood Creek, but THAT is where Shasta County starts, and Terri just WON'T give me any breaks!!)

30 miles out of town, CC&R's won't be an issue.

What I'm thinking is to build the garage, probably with a 5/12 or 6/12 pitch roof, then build the level platform off of that. Put the stairs up OUTSIDE of tha garage.

I didn't say it, but get the permit to do the garage, and put the observation deck on as an "After Thought"
