On a metal exterior door, have yellowing and thin paint with some metal showing where my hand has been hitting over the years above the doorknob.

Tried painting with some latex after cleaning it with alcohol but the paint doesn't last more than a few days.

Any suggestions?

Alcohol is not much of a cleaner. Clean the door with TSP, prime with Zinsser 123 and paint with a top quality exterior latex paint.

.....or, wash the offending area with paint thinner or any good solvent and follow chfite's directions.....Mike
