While making some unrelated repairs i discovered that ther are two holes (one on each side) in the back of my fire box. they are covered with pieces of sheet metal and are about 1" in diameter. I suspect that they are air inlets to draw outside air into the fire box to aid the combustion process and prevent backdraft. I think that the sheetmetal covers should be removed. Is this just silly, plain wrong or in the ball park? I have searched for some manufactures label or mark but have been unsuccesful despite having demolished the wall sorrounding the unit. Any clues or tips are greatly appreciated.

jlawley,
I would have a professional evaluate what you have and what can be done. It would be the best choice not being able to see what you have.
Good Luck!
