I just noticed in the basement water coming down from the top of the window. It appeared the water was coming down from both sides of the window jamb (down the glass and through the window trim. What I thought was strange was that my printer was soaked with water which was 1 ft away from the window. The carpet was wet but the walls were dry. There were strong wind gusts but I do not feel any wind coming through the window. The heating/air vent is above the printer but is bone dry as is the ceiling. We have a two story home and there is a window directly above the basement window on the 1st floor which is also dry. Would this rule out a roof leak?. The house is 3 years old, and of course this happened just as I finished the basement. Should I try caulking the window and if so where should I caulk? Or could it be something else.
Thanks in advance
Jim

I found where the water is coming from. There is an air duct that comes from the outside to the utility room to cycle fresh air to the furnace. I haven't put up the ceiling yet so I was fortunate enough to notice the top plate along the wall was soaked. The insulation in the ceiling directed the water down the wall through the window. Now my question is when they install the duct, is it common practice to caulk the duct behind the siding before the siding is installed or is it just necessary to caulk along the perimeter of the duct against the siding?
The duct is caulked along the siding. I need to check the caulk in the morning and will most likely caulk again as a precaution. I cannot tell what has been done underneath the siding. One possibility could be that the water is getting behind the siding from the window above and hitting the air duct and coming in. We have had draft problems with that window. Should I caulk where the siding jchannel meets the window? Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jim

Jim,
Water problems are THE hardest thing to diagnose even when you're looking at it......doing it online is about impossible quite honestly.....
Do caulk where the channel meets the window, but also look inside the channel.......a LOT of times the channel acts as a "gutter" and the water runs in behind the siding at the corners of the J channel near the top and bottom.....caulk there too....
Then I'd get out the water hose and start hosing the siding one area at a time to try to find a leak inside.
good luck
