I had furniture built in black walnut wood. Since I wanted the furniture's color to be dark, I chose black stain. The paint store recommended gel stain for easier application. Unfortunately now there is hardly any of the beautiful veining of the wood visible. How can I lighten it, I already tried to wipe over it with paint thinner, it didn't do much good.

Such a shame to try to cover black walnut.
I hope a stripper (sodium hydroxide) or a wood bleach will remove the stain down to the beautiful walnut. Do some testing (always) in an inconspicuous spot. As a last resort sanding it down will eventually remove the stain also.
Only inexpensive pine is worth ebonizing.

good luck,
