Recently, before painting our dining room, I used low-tack tape (the blue kind) to mask all of finished wood trim in the room. It did a great job keeping the drips off, but when I removed the tape, the adhesive lifted the finish (varnish?) off the vertical sides of the window frame. No other trim (baseboards, doorframe, the rest of the window trim) was damaged.

Can you recommend the best repair? Would a light sanding and revarnishing work? Would it adhere?

I would love to be able to refinish only the damaged surfaces (1/2 in wide, perpendicular to the wall), and not have to redo the faces, sill, window bench, etc.

Thanks in advance for the input!

It seems that a light sanding 180 - 240 grit, then reapplication should restore the varnish. Some adhesive products have restrictions on where they should be applied. None of them should be left on any longer than absolutely necessary.

Hope this helps.
