My house was built in 1952 and still has the original single hung, single pane windows. I am in the process of replacing all of them as well as the siding. However, I don't know what is more beneficial -- new windows or just replacements. The walls are studded. Can you offer any suggestions?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Several things.
Depends on what YOU want. If you want a wood window on the inside ( and DO go vinyl or aluminum clad on the outside ), you'll need to go with new windows......
If the choice is new vinyl to replacement vinyl, then it depends on your openings and how much you want to spend IF they need modifications.
The basic difference in a "new" vinyl window and a "replacement" vinyl is the NW is made to stock sizes......you make your hole fit that size, as is commonly done in new construction.
A replacement is custom built to fit any size hole.
You can get both with the same features...tilt to wash, LowE glass, full screens if you want, colonial grid between the glass, etc
NWs often also have a built in "J" channel for vinyl siding, which is handy if you're doing the siding and saves channel and labor also.
NWs are generally cheaper since they can be mass produced versus replacements. Depending on how much modifications your existing holes require ( if any ), you may or may not come out ahead with new windows after spending the money on material and labor to modify the holes. BUT if you also doing siding, and maybe want to increase or decrease window size, NOW is sure the time to do that.
Those are the factors to consider in your decision.

Not anymore. Pella now makes an aluminum clad ext./wood int.replacement window.

Are they out now? Where can I find out more about them?

I work at Menards (home improvement chain in the upper midwest) and we've had them on display for a few months now. Pella, Iowa isn't far from here, so it could be that this is a test market for them.
I'll see if I can get a brochure and post the info here.

cem-bsee,
"Storms" are a dated technology that wasn't very good when it was new! If sarahgrinde replaces or retrofits her old windows with units that have Low-E or Low-E Squared glass, she can reasonabley expect to reduce her energy costs by 20% or more, and will notice a SIGNIFICANT reduction in the noise level in her house, and eliminate drafts. "Storms" would, at best, only provide a marginal improvement in those 3 areas, and she would be stuck with a lot of maintenance on them. Just not money well spent, at least in my opinion!
Duster, Joe -- Pella's are a good window, but they are a hard sell around here. We have Amerimax and EPI's which offer equal or better performance, have an equal or better warranty, and cost 1/3 to 1/2 what the Pella's go for, installed.
