I am looking to build some low cost 6' benches to be used with a an existing picnic table. I have the plans (but suggestions are always welcome) but I am not sure about the wood to use.

The bench top is two 2x6 boards (or three 2x4) and the legs are from 2x4 lumber. The wood I have seen around is either the green colored stuff or cedar or plain stud grade lumber.

These will stay outside and be used infrequently but I would prefer not to have to rebuild them every few years. Any ideas?

Lastly, if I put a stain or preservative on them, how long before I can sit on them?

Here is a bench that I like. You could scale it up to your needs.

I would use pressure treated wood and paint it for longevity.

Finishes are usually ready for use after 24 hours.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. I would love to see the bench you referred to but I can't access anything at that site. Do I need something special to get access to it?

I am sorry. I was working in the security settings last night before I left for Knoxville and blocked everyone out. It is o.k. now.
