We have two dressers that we'd like to paint to make match the bedroom that they are in. One is natural finish with clear coat (of some kind). The other is a cheap melamine dresser. We'd like to paint them both and (of course) change their appearance. What tips can you provide for me?

I was thinking with the "real" wood one of buffing the finish and painting over. What type of paint should I be looking for?

As far as the melamine one, I was thinking that I might "scuff" the melamine surface and make it so the paint will adhere to it. Would I need primer?

Would I need primer for either?

Thanks!

Clean the dressers thoroughly with mineral spirits to remove all grease, grime, and wax. Scuff sand lightly with some 150 - 180 grit sandpaper. Prime and paint.

A good primer for this application is Zinsser 123. It bonds well to slick surfaces and is useful for melamine. Use a top quality paint to finish. Allow a few days after the last coat for the finish to cure completely before placing it in service.

Hope this helps.
