Hi - My deck will be split into 2 levels. The upper level ledger will be bolted to the rim of the house on top of the cripple wall. Plenty of wood to bolt to.

The question I have regards the lower level ledger which only has the cripple wall to bolt to. Should I go into the crawl space and add 4x6 headers between each cripple stud so that the lower ledger will have something to bolt to? It's only about 10' in length, so it wouldn't be a big deal to do this.

TIA,
rob

Hello
it looks like no one offerd any help....well you know it is better to be safe than sorry....but if you can find the cripple stud and use 2 lags into each it should be more than strong enough use a 2" larger ledger than the joist to give more support....

Oopps!! Sorry we missed seeing your post when it was put on the board.

I would make the deck free-standing. I just don't like to punch holes in the siding of a house, or putting things (like deck ledgers) against a wall. The ledger will trap moisture (as well as dirt, etc.) and you could be creating problems with rot. The holes have been known to leak, destroying the inside of the wall that they are attached to.

Built properly, a deck does not need to be attached to the house.
