I purchased a house recently. Inside the shed I found a bunch of cans of old paint. All types and sizes. Now my local trash company will not take them in the pick-up. What is the proper way to dispose of such materials?

What kind of paint? Some communities have 'hazmat' days where old 'hazmat' items can be dropped off. if yours does not the easiest way is to dry the stuff out untill it is hard and then the trash service should take it. You can do it faster by mixing kitty litter with the old paint and spreading the resulting goop out on some newspaper to dry out. Once dry it is no longer a hazerdous waste.

I think latex paints can simply be left with their tops off & they'll dry to a rubber lump which can then be discarded normally.
