Residential & Commercial Security - Locks, Keys & Dead Bolts - Rekeying existing locks

I want to rekey the locks in my house. I have a couple of questions.

- There are kits available @ ~$13.00/kit that claim to be able to replace 6 locks. Are these kits any good? Anyone has any experience with them?

- These kits are specific to certain kind of locks. How do I determine what kind of lock I have? There are terms like "deadbolt" and "entrance" locks, "Kwikset type", "EZ Set", "Titan Type". "Schlage C Type" and so on.

- Or is it not worth dealing with these kits and have a pro do the job?

Names of the locks are often found on your keys if they are original. Also on the latch on the edge of the door.

The kits will work if you get the right one. Be careful-if you lose any of the small pins-you have no options but to buy another kit if you run out.

Pros will usually charge 6 to 10 dollars a lock plus a trip charge and keys do it on site. If you are able to remove them and bring them to the shop-that is the cheapest way to have the pro do it-no trip charge.
