we decided to re wallpaper a room. we sprayed the old paper with warm water and peeled the old paper from the wall, it came off rather easily. this left some type of residue that we are having trouble removing. the paper we removed was original and only about 15 yrs old, applied to the sheet-rock (wallboard).
do I have to do any type of prep work or "sizing" before tring to hang new pre-pasted wallpaper????? we also used a product called DIF, but it doesn't seem to do the job. the substance seems to be a yollowishcolor and semi roughon the surface, trying to remove it has left some tears in the original wall board cover. HOW MUCH TROUBLE AM I IN????

Sounds like somebody used too much glue on unprimed wallboard. If it is impossible to scrub off, going over it is an option, but it still will be very hard to remove in the future.

Your next step depends on if you want to do it right, or just put more paper over it.

Let us know what route you will take and I'll explain the specifics to you.

we would really like to do it rite, if it's not too much trouble. might it also be a factor that the project is in a bathroom!!

Let your walls dry out thoroughly, and lightly sand with 120 grit paper. Dust off, and prime walls with an oil-based primer. Preferably one that is slow drying, not Kilz.

After its dry, lightly sand again. Then float out all rough and uneven areas with joint compound, as many coats as needed to make smooth. Then spot prime these areas with Zinsser Gardz, or Scotch's DrawTite, or more of the oil primer, any of the above.

Then prime it with a QUALITY WALLCOVERING primer. Then hang the new paper.

Hope that helped.

thank you for the information we will give it a try, so much for that fishing trip over the holiday.:)
