Hello!
I'm just about to put the walls up in my bathroom. I am going to tile the bathtub surround and the floor.
I am getting conflicting responses to the question:
"Should I use backerboard or the greenboard for the walls surrounding the tub/shower?".
(The fellow at HomeDepot said I should use greenboard so I've already bought it).
If I should use backerboard, should I use 1/2" thick ceramic tile backerboards or regular drywall with 1/4" Rhino board.
Thanks so much!
Pete

Pete,
First off, gypsum based products are not recommended for wet areas. It can be used underneath a Cement Backer Board but not as a substrate to tile applications as in a tub/shower surround.
Lookm at this,

Hope this helps!

I'm sorry that some idiot at the HD store suggested green board, I guess he has never done tile.
Concrete board is the way to go if you want your progect to last more than a few years.

I have seen where people use greenboard for tile.......it's nuts.
Flexes way too easy for tile.

My mother-in-law just had her bathroom torn apart because of a leaking bathtub and the plumber put in greenboard even though he knew I was going to tile...now I have to see...when he's finally done...if I'll be able to put cement board over it or if I will have to take it down first.
I NEVER ask the guys at home depot a question unless they are the elderly people that work there...they usually know something...the other people usually point you in the wrong direction everytime.
