Please weigh-in on this a friend suggested mixing Dove dish soap with drywall joint compound. This, he's heard, will make a smooth, no-sand finish. Any truth to this?

No. And I think it makes the mud weaker.

If you put the mud on smoothly enough with the knife, it would be a no-sand finish, too. It seems unlikely that adding dishwashing detergent to joint compound would be beneficial.
