I had planned on installing an 8' tall suspended ceiling in my 10' tall basement. The room is 10' tall, 42' long. Half of the room is 20' wide and the other half is 15' wide. Joists (trusses) are 24"oc and run in the direction shown in the first diagram. Lots of ductwork hangs from these joists in the right 2/3 of the picture.

I'm now toying with the idea of a drywall ceiling. I think I can mount the left side directly to the 24"oc trusses as the ductwork runs through the trusess, not underneath. This would give me a 10' ceiling on that side of the room.

My question concerns the other side of the room. I'll do this at 8'. I guess I need to install a joist sytem on the right 2/3s of the room. I was going to run the joists in the direction shown in picture 2, and hang drywalling as shown in the 3rd.

I feel comfortable with the center (horizontal) section. What kind of material should I use for the 15' joist spans. Is this the right approach. Any and all help is welcome.

Thanks...
