Hello Folks, I have to replace and change the size of 4 windows. I've looked at the Anderson new construction at 220.00. Then I read in here that I could frame the window with 2x4's and use replacement windows instead. The Home Depot brand American craftsman are about 140.00. Anything wrong with this approach or the HD window??? Thanks in advance. Eric

Nothing wrong with that approach....the only real difference in a "replacement" window and a new construction is the NCs have a nailing flange and are only made in stock sizes........
There is, however, a difference in quality of brands. Home Depot American Crapsman is the "house" brand for HD......any time you buy the "house" brand at a big box store, you're getting the minimum bid contractor that cut every corner they could to get the product in the store....remember that......and don't expect the same level of quality.

Thanks Andy, I guess I'll suck up the price difference now instead of later. Eric

Eric,
It really sorta depends on what you want to do......I just didn't want you to confuse AmCrapsman with Andersen in terms of quality.
Personally, I have used, and will use again, AmCrapsman in my rental houses......it's a perfectly adequate window "for the money"......especially since I buy the mis-measured ones out at HD and built my hole to fit them......For $50 a window, they start to look REAL good :)........ahahahaha
But in MY house, I have Andersens because I plan to live there the rest of my days and "I" ain't looking at no cheapy window when I know the difference.
You could still go with a better vinyl window, Like Simontons or something similar, and hit the middle of the road in terms of price and quality, so that is something to consider.
I was just passing on a caution about BigBox house brands.....like I said, price is EVERYTHING when a company bids to be the "house brand".......and thus the corner cutting begins. Just one of those little economic facts of life, but necessary, since a lot of folks JUST shop price.......guess that's why they were able to sell Yugo's, huh ??? :)

Andy, Thanks for the help. I went to HD to buy the windows and they were one unit short. (starting to hate them, the stores are a mess lately and always low on stock). I then went to Lowes and wound up getting the size Pella's N/C for 169.00. The only difference was no Argon gas, which I heard leaks out in a couple years anyway. Very happpy and thanks for your help. Eric

I bought some of thier "house brand" windows and they are WORLDS better than the 1920 rotted wooden windows that they replaced.
$90.00 each brand new "new construction" 32x60 vinyl tilt-in.
This is for a $20,000 house that will eventually become a rental so I didn't see any sense in spending more.
