I'm installing a partition wall, separating one large bedroom into two. My architect suggests hanging two layers of half-inch drywall to help with sound reduction. Three questions:

First: should I stagger the joints between the layers?

Second: what screw sizes should I use for the first and second layers?

Third: do I need to tape/mud the first layer?

Any other suggestions?

Staggering the wall studs to prevent a continuous path for the sound is important.

For two layers, taping will not be needed for the first course. Offsetting the seams would be a good idea. 1.25 inch for the first course, 1.75 inch for the second course.
