I have a Sears Central A/C system that was installed approx. 12 years ago. All of a sudden it stopped cooling. Can someone give me an idea as to why???? Do these systems need to be recharged??? The air coming out is warm.

Need more info. Is the outdoor unit running at all? There is a fan and a compressor out there what's it doing? Do you see any frost on the copper lines coming out of the furnace?

When I last checked the fan outside was not running. There is no frost on the lines to the furnace. The lines are room temp.

1st off check the double breaker in the breaker box and see if it's tripped.

Single Mom - all instructions must be in black and white :D - Is that the box on the wall outside??? Or the one in the garage??

It's the one in the garage. It will look like 2 breakers together and will be about a 30 amp. If it's tripped it will be sitting about in the mid position as compared to the others.
While you're checking this turn the stat off and leave it off if the breaker is not tripped wait a few minutes and turn it back to cooling and go out side and see if you hear anything.
That sounds kinda funny "see if you hear"

Well, The breaker was ok. My ex came over to take the boys to dinner and he checked everything. He decided to reset the thermostat and when he hit the reset button - everything shut down and came back and the compressor turned on and the air is working.
Why would that work????

Any idea what re-set button he hit? Where it might have been located?

The reset button on the stat. The whole thing reset and the compressor kicked on.

replace the tstat before it happens again. get a digital one with a built in time delay to prevent the unit from going off and then right back on. most of them have them

I have a digital one. But I don't know if it has a time delay. This started about 3 weeks ago when there was a power outage - could that have caused it??

I have no idea - I got it from Home Depot right after I had the air put in about 12 years ago - do they go bad???

I think this may be an air filter reminder after so many hours you need to reset it, AFTER you change the filters. I think something elese is going on. It would be best to have a qualified tech check the gas pressures. The outdoor coil may just be dirty causing the head pressure to trip the lockout relay. Kill the power to the outdoor unit and spray it down with simple green and the garden hose to help remove SOME of the dirt that MAY be causing this....if afterward it happens again, get it looked at.
