OK - I use backer board before ceramic tile - but do I take the flooring (linoleum) up first, or afix the backer board to the linoleum, then tile.

it is always best to remove the vinyl before installing the ceramic. If the vinyl is a type that is glued over the entire floor"full spread application"and is not real spongy then you can go ahead with the install, only one layer of vinyl also, use 1/2 " durock providing you have the heighth not to interfer with the refrigerator at the cabinets or at the transitions to other rooms, trip hazzard or toe stubber:cool:

Thanks Floor Man! I believe the vinyl is not spongy and only one layer - but don't believe I have the height to add backer board and the tile/thinset. I am assuming you lay the backer board down with thinset first and then the tile. Is there an easy way to remove the vinyl if glued down?
