HI-

My wife and I bought an 80 year old house and are coming to find why people wall paper over plaster... I ripped the wallpapper off the kitchen to find about 1 million holes in the plaster underneath... ARGG..... Most look smaller than a nail hole.. So of course when you don't fill em' ya see em.....

What would be good way to cover over those holes.. Spackle the entire wall? Its only 5 foot high and 15 foot long. The rest is covered by cabinets and panneling and chair rail....

I feel the best way to solve the holes issue is to cover the entire wall and re- sand smooth?

What should I use to do this? Spackle? Certain consistancy?

Thanks for any help or links you can offer us...

Have a great weekend... WHats left anyway:rolleyes:

if you're going to replaster, use pre mixed s/r plaster, comes in 1 & 5 gallon buckets. invest in a plastic s/r pan & a 6 & 12" blade. its all labor, but i'm sure you can handle it. g/l

It is a shame that you have a problem with your plaster walls. It is quite unusual. I would go over the wall with lightweight joint compound straight from the container, just enough to fill the small holes that you describe, then sand smooth. Then prime and paint.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. I did in fact spackle all the holes. Although you can still see the imperfections in the plaster, its not as bad. People say it adds character to the house this old... Who knows..

Sorry it took so long to respond, I was busy working on the house...

Thanks again

If you're gonna sand any more of those plaster walls be careful about breathing the dust -- lead paint.

just a word of caution to anyone working on older homes w/ plastered ceilings, at one time lye was added to the plaster mix for whatever reason, i had a ceiling fall on me once, almost lost my eye sight because of it. the dust didn't bother too much, but when i washed it out, it leached into my eyes, felt like a hot poker was jambed into my eyes.
