Have existing bathtub which is already tiled (very well) 2-3 feet about the tub. We are installing a shower head to make it a combo tub/shower and want to tile further up the wall, leaving the existing tile in place.
I figure to nail a backer board to the studs of the plain wall above the existing tile and then tile on top of that. Does that sound correct? Any tricks on installing the backer to a finished painted wall?
Also, there is currently a 1/4-round border on the top of the existing tile. I don't really want to take it out (not confident I can do so without breaking tiles) but hope to tile straight up from it, perhaps with a flat border between that and my new tile job and lots of caulk to ensure water-tightness. Will that work?
Any thoughts/advice are welcome! THANKS.
