Hello,
I need to have a new outdoor unit installed on my townhouse. I have received two bids so far - $1710 for a 2.5 ton 10 SEER (Ducane) and $1488 for Payne (same specifications). Are these reasonable prices? If I wanted to buy the unit myself and pay for a licensed installer to install it, what should I be expecting to pay for unit and labor? Also what brands should I avoid? Thanx in advance!

You dont say where you live. To put a 10 Seer in now is like going back 10 years. Its like how long do you run this AC now. If its a short time go for a 12 if you run it a long time go for a 14 , and a real long summer time a SEER of 16. No matter what you put in you do have to change the indoor coil also to match the out door unit . Not seeing the job the price not bad. I thing you will do better$$$$ to have a company put it in. This way you know who will back it. Unit brands Im for Trane or Rheem but like they say the guy thats been there a long time will back what he sells.;) ED

What do you mean by change the indoor coil (sorry, I'm a novice)? I live in Delaware. Doesn't get real hot. A/C doesn't run alot!

Ok not a long run for AC . But do go for a 12 SEER unit there. You cant just put any "outdoor unit or so called highside" or condenser on the coil you have in the furnace now. You have to have a new coil in the furnace that matches the new outdoor unit.

Hire an ESTABLISHED pro that will back his work!!! Don't think so??? Read some of the horror stories on this site! Wouldn't that be nice to buy a condensing unit and come to find you can find a sole to install it!!!! Be above board, don't cut corners,... replace the indoor coil for sure, and ask for a TXV. This is a metering device that will adjust to varing load conditions. Make sure you have a crank case heater in the condensing unit. Not all units have them. Have the pro check the duct system first to make sure it will handle the tonnage. If you say," install this", he will, BUT then, you relieve him of all responsibility in so doing...

If you're hell bent on purchasing the unit on your own go to www.orderacdirect.com and have them ship it to your front door. Then look in you local paper and find a one- man -shop hvac guy who is semi -retired or moonlights and he will be able to assist you in installing unit. ---Regards, Bill
