Hi,
I am laying floor tile in our kitchen/dining room. I have torn the area down to the sub floor which is 1 x 8 planks (solid – no creaks or loose boards). I’ve heard that installing backer board over planks is not advisable, but that I could install plywood over the planks, and then backer board over the plywood. I would prefer not to have to replace the sub floor.
I am trying to match the height as closely as possible with the hardwood floor in the next room. There is ¾” height difference currently between the top of the sub floor and the top of the hardwood floor.
My questions are:
1. Is laying plywood over the plank sub floor an adequate fix.
2. If so, I’m not sure what thickness of plywood and backer
board to use to hit my target height.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
