I have a Janitrol a/c approx. 15yrs old. Lately I have noticed it will turn on without a problem but after it runs for a short while the outside compressor fan will stop turning while the inside one stays on, the air stays cold. The problem is with the outside fan because it doesn't take too long after it stops running that it begins to make a very loud hum. Any ideas? Thanks.

Turn the power off to the out side unit. Till you can get the condenser fan fixed. If you dont you could hurt the compressor;) ED

By doing this, shuting off the power outside, will I still have air conditioning? I live in Florida, it gets hot. Is there a place I can go to read on how to replace the condenser fan?
Thanks

Im down here with you, and its hot. But I would still turn the power off to the outdoor unit. You will still have just the fan in side turn it to on running to help cool some. You can try www.toad.net and see there. But to day dont think you can buy a motor for it. You could pull the motor out now also the capacitor with it and take them with you so you get the same motor and capacitor. the right RPM and 220 volts.
Grainger or Johnstone supply would have them if you can buy there.;) ED

Based on the information so far, what do you think the problem is? Been watching it all day and I noticed that it doesn't do it every time also tried to move fan with a stick and nothing happened (during the time it stopped)

If you let it run with out the condenser fan you are going to end up buying a new compressor here . Shut it off till you get it fixed:rolleyes: ED
