I live in Mass,and was wondering if you knew the correct spacing to be up to code for a 2nd story porch railing banisters?

Your code may vary, but the rule of thumb is that the bannisters (hand rail) should be between 36" and 42" from the surface. The balusters (vertical supports under the hand rail) should be spaced so that a 4" diameter ball won't fit between them. Many use a 2x4 as a spacer for the balusters. It is simple and provides 3-1/2" spacing between them. An exception can apply at the newel post (where the hand rail mounts) wherein 6" spacing can apply for it.
