What does the term "float" mean?

In what context? Float a loan, float the concrete,...?

float, as in drywall, mud, tape, etc.

OK. Float and tape, mud and tape. The terminology goes on endlessly.
The term applies to applying the joint compound to the joint. Essentially, you spread the compound with a series of taping knives, starting with 6:, then 8/10" then 12" for the last pass. Each time you are trying to keep the work smooth, to reduce sanding. You are also trying to feather the application along the edges to blend it into the surrounding wallboard.
