I am replacing the vinyl in my kitchen and breakfast area with 16X16 ceramic tiles. I pulled up the vinyl without a problem and have a little bit of glue residue on the underlayment. My question is, can I place my tile underlayment on top of the existing floor with a bed of thinset, or should the 1/4 underlayment for the vinyl come up first? Also, any thoughts on the best underlayment to use for the tile. Thanks.

Scrape the plywood as clean as you can and put a CBU underlayment down with thinset and many screws.

P.S.
Make sure the mortar you use is labled for use with a 16" tile. Many of them are not! :D
