I am installing a new tile floor in our kitchen. I have removed all the flooring down to the least possible subflooring section possible (I.e. 1" decking + 1/2" cdx plywood). For the record, I would have gone with 1/4" cdx plywood, however I was not convinced that the 1/4" firmly attached would elliviate all the deflection between the 1" boards. Unfortunately when I add the 1/4" backerboard with the 1/4" porcelin tile plus grout I will end up with a drop off of around 5/8" to an 1", Opps ! . I am using a bull nose tile edging as well. I am looking for suggestions to minimize the height of the transition from the wood floor to the tile. I am afraid of creating a tripping hazard for all future generations to enjoy! Note: I will not be using a metal threshold coverover top of the tile/wood floor joint because it will look ugly. I have thought of an Oak wedge that could be custon made to slide under the tile edge and attach to the wood flooring?

Please submit your thoughts to me. Help!

there are a few things that come to mind, avariable threshold that will sit on the wood floor that has a rise to it and alip that will over hang slightly on the tile,or a wood reducer that buts the tile and sits on the wood with a gradual rise. You're right about the metal it looks gaudy.Check with you're local flooring supply or wood flooring supplier about these, not lowe's or h.d.
