I began taking down the wallpaper in my kitchen that the previous owners had hung and what a job this has become. They had not only put paper over paper but, paper over paper over painted wallpaper over paper on untreated drywall. so this means they hung wallpaper immidately after construction.(my house was built in 1970)so now, b/c they did not prep the walls the first time and just continued to go over it, my walls are very rough and uneven . I have removed the old paste with hot water and pinesol and a plastic wallscraper and am still left with spots that came off with the paper. i did score and soak it and took my time so I guess this was unavoidable. my question is how do I smooth them out. I don't want to replace the drywall. also b/c most of my kitchen walls are fine b/c they only papered one large wall and the inside of the soffit( which was the worst b/c they nevref rmoved it the paint rally glued it up there) do I have to spackle and sand it all or is there some sort of primer i can use to smooth them. also, I do realize some will have to be spackled , and that i have to prime before I paint regardless of how i smooth the walls. I also do NOT want more wallpaper. in fact I think it should be taken off the market. ugh! sorry to keep rambling this has me so mad! another thing I was wondering is if some sortof eletric sander might be easier if i have to plaster it all?Thaanks in advance. a reply asap would be much appriciated, we are also having my daughters birthday party her in less than 4 weeks!

Its a shame how easy it is to prep a wall correctly for wallpaper and many just don't do it. Sorry to hear your nightmare. Yes, you have to spackle or float the rough spots with joint compound. If the drywall is torn down to brown paper, you need to seal these areas before patching them or they will bubble up. Use a drywall repair product like Gardz or DrawTite, or a oil-based primer. Then float areas as many times as needed to get smooth, then prime with a Quality latex primer.

Hope this helps

hey prowallguy, I just wanted to say thanks for replying. I would not have guessed that I need to prime the brown paper spots before repairing. I'll let you know how my walls turn out. I just got done spending a few more hours scraping paste.......
