Hi
I am wanting to slate or tile over my brick fireplace. I have questions about the required preparation.

Do I need to use hardibacker over the brick or can I use thinset directly on the brick and lay the tile? My brain tells me that the porous surface of brick would be excellent for bonding, but I am new to this, so I don't trust my brain quite yet:)

Also, are there any special requirements due to the heat? This is a gas fireplace, and quite honestly probably won't be used all that often, but still, I want to be sure.

I think that is all for now.
Thanks!!

as long as the surface is clean and free of any silt or anything that may hinder the bond you should be fine. You maywant to use a schluter metal on the edge that will see the most heat around the opening itself to protect it somewhat but other than that i dont see any problems doing it that way.Make sure you use thin set though and not mastic:cool:
