I would like to remove a wall between my den and formal living room. The wall does run in the same direction as the roof ridge. Can a still remove the wall but leave supporting posts? If I can, how do I tell where to put the posts? Do I need to get the original plans and let a contactor figure it out? Do you know where I can locate original floor plans?

Plans are helpful, but if you know what you are looking at, you can access your attic and see what you need to see.

A contractor would know what to look for: i.e. how the walls are tied together and what kind of bearing each wall is carrying.

A short answer is YES you can remove the wall, but you'll need all the ducks lined up first.

The long answer is that a simple post will probably not carry the load. You might be best off with an LVL header.
