I have just bought a house built in 1977 with popcorn ceilings. I want to replace the ceiling completely because I hate the look. Do I scrape off the popcorn? Can you recommend a reference book? There is (reportably) no asbetos in the popcorn.

Who told you that there is no asbestos in the acoustic? 1977 is a tough call -- that is about the time they started discontinuing the use of asbestos in the acoustic. The only way to be sure would be to have it tested. The proceedure to remove it is the same, regardless of whether or not it contains asbestos. The difference will be the cost of legally disposing of it.

Thanks for the response. I bought the house from the first and only owner and it was in the disclosure documents which he produced from the time the house was built. Do drywall companies do this work (scrape off the popcorn and replace with a different type of finish)? I want to put up wooden planks or (more likely) a plank-look painted white for a "cottage look". The ceilings are peaked, not flat. In the bedrooms, flat ceilings, I would go for paint over drywall. Is there a book on this?
