the upstairs ceiling height of my two floor home is approx 7' tall and i'd like to raise it. i have a pitched roof (approx 30 degrees), what are my options? ideally i'd like to open the ceiling all the way.

Start at your local bldg. dept. and get a permit. Then go to a local truss company and order new trusses that will give you the ceiling you want. When the trusses are ready, strip everything off of the second story of the house from the toplate of the walls, UP!!! Oh, and make sure your roofing contractor will be there when you need him, too. Guaranteed, it WILL rain on you before everything gets covered back up!
quote:
Originally posted by David D:

Lefty is right. Except he forgot one thing.
Make sure you have a big checkbook before you start. Raising the roof is like raising your blood pressure. There is no cheap way to do it. Good Luck

Well, yeah, I forgot to mention the part about the big checkbook. But the size of the checkbook doesn't mean much -- it's the account balance that matters!!
quote:
Originally posted by Jack the Contractor:

I may be wrong, but I think he was only talking about openning the ceiling up to the rafters. I don't think he was asking about raising the roof. (If you want to raise the roof, have an affair and you wife will raise it for you.)

Good Luck, and sorry, I couldn't resist.

Marshall, getting the roof raised by having an affair is only a probability. However, removing the ceiling joists from beneath the rafters will result in the roof being lowered -- ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR!! (And that, my friend, is a CERTAINTY!)
quote:
Originally posted by Marshall Buttrey:
