HELP! What would be the best method and products to regain a smooth surface on plaster walls that have been textured with what appears to be sand? I have been thinking of using dry wall compound to smooth the surface, but am not sure if there will be adhesion problems. The walls also have been painted with latex paint. Any advice is appreciated!

Using a topping compound would probably work, but there are a lot of other things that would come into play. How sound are the present walls? How well are they insulated? Do they have some sort of a moisture barrier? How smooth do you hope to get them?

The walls are in good shape. There isn't any moisture barriers installed that I'm aware off. Three of the walls are interior and one wall faces the exterior. If the walls come up smooth enough to paper or paint I'd be happy! By the way, is a topping mixture in this case similar to ceramic tile grout or some other compound? Thanks for your help.
