We removed the popcorn texture from our ceiling and want to put on a simple texture. We are thinking of getting an air compressor and wanted to find out how difficult it is to use, etc.

I would probably just apply a skip-trough texture using a 12" knife. A lot less messy, (especially on a ceiling!) a lot less material waste, and about the same amount of time involved. When I did mine last year, I found that applying a coat of primer to the ceiling BEFORE texturing it made it a lot easier to texture too. You can't remove ALL of the residue of the acoustic and what is left will just ball up when the topping compound hits it. Priming it eliminates this.
