I'm looking to build a retaining wall and some stairs up to my front door. The hill slopes from the front door down to the driveway. The retaining wall would have to be abour 4 feet tall and about 16' long, then a 4' stair section, then continue the retaining wall about 12', but only about 2 feet tall. Someone suggested making the retaining wall of 4x4 PT lumber, with adequate dead legs and anchor one end to the house foundation. My concern is with the hill backfilled , will 4x4's be strong enough to hold that weight? I'm looking for a relative inexpensive means to level the yard off. Any advice would be great.

Hi,
a retaining wall with 4' is not a DIY project. You will need an engineer to calculate the wall and foundation,
Good luck,
