I am texturing a ceiling and have heard that I can save a step by mixing my paint with the mud before applying the mud to the ceiling. How much paint do I use and should I use paint instead of water or both paint and water?

When I finish a ceiling, I put a coat of paint on the ceiling first, then after it is dry I texture it. To thin down the mud I use a 50% water - 50% paint mix.
