i have read through all of the other questions and answers in this site. it is very good info. i have done a lot of home improvement tasks as paneling, wallpaper, tile work, but am a little scared to try to tackle wood floors myself after reading through all the problems that can accure that i would never have thought of.
a few answers to some of my major concers would be appreciated.
i have a 70's home with carpeting throughout. i love the warmth and softness of carpeting in our main living room and hall. i want to rip out the Bedroom carpeting and install wood floors. i have neighbors and friends telling me that doing the bedrooms and leaving the carpeting in the living area and hall would be a "fashion mistake". is that true...would it look wierd to leave the carpeting down the hall and have the ajoining 3 bedrooms in wood? i have been reading about subflooring. i am sure that mine is all concrete. am i supposed to have plywood laid down first before the wood or is the concrete alright as long as it's level. i understand that all the baseboards must be taken off first...what do i do about the door frames. they are of a wierd shape that i am not sure if i can cut around trying to get into the closets. i have read about all these differant types of wood and laminates that are available. that is my bigest confusion. i don't ever want to have to replace these floors once i get them down and i have read about the laminates fading, so what product should i look at using. i have two dogs, no children at home. two bedrooms are just used for the occasional guests. the other one is our bedroom where our dogs sleep. also is there a particular color of wood that would look alright with the different woods in the furniture? all bedroom should have the same wood and where is the stopping point between the bedroom wood floor and the carpeting?
Help Please!! subflooring?? door frame cuts??
what kind of wood?? stopping point?
thank you for the help.

For starters read this page link...It's incomplete in DIY information for the moment but should give you some ideas on whether or not you want to do the work or hire someone else. You've asked alot and some has to do with personal preferance.

As far as the bedrooms; I see more hardwood flooring placed in these areas;

Foyer
Great room
Dining room
Powder rooms

Some kitchens

Generally bedrooms are left for carpeting.

What application best suits your needs? The subfloor is important in deceiding, but you'll have to find out what type to be sure for some of us to assist.
