we are considering an adobe finish on the family room walls in our new house. I am looking for comments and suggestions on how to do this.

Adobe is red dirt and water made into mud. I don't think you want it in your family room.
I think you want stucco instead. Most Home Improvement stores will have the supplies.
However, it is a three step process, and if you do not have the expertise, please do not attempt it. have a concrete finisher put it on for you. You can have a real mess.

Is this for the interior or the exterior of the walls? Jack's suggestion and advise about the stucco is fine for the extrerior, but if you are talking about the interior texture, that is a very different thing. There you can acheive an adobe-like texture using either joint or topping compound. You can try it yourself and with some practice be able to achieve the look you want, or simply hire it done and be painting it next weekend.
