We replaced the paneling with drywall. Forgot to allow that the drywall was thicker than the paneling. Now the molding around the doors does not fit flush against the drywall. Suggestions for the 1/2" difference?

Dot, I signed on this morning to find the exact same information. I sure hope someone answers soon. If not, I may take the ease way out and replace the paneling with paneling. Good Luck

I had the same problem around windows and a doorway. I removed the molding from the paneling before screwing on new drywall. There are two options to complete the molding. 1. Extend the door/window casing, toward the room. The additional wood strip is used to set the jam/casing flush with the drywall. The new extension can be glued and nailed to the underside of the molding 2. Remove the drywall where the molding will go. Score the drywall paper at proper location. Then a chisel can be used to simply scrape away the excess drywall. This method is explained nicely at http://www.hammerzone.com/archives/finishcarp/casing/door/wallprob.html

If the paneling you removed was 1/4", then replaced it with 1/2" drywall, the difference is 1/4".
Purchase 1/4"x 3/4" screenstop and install it on the jamb with 1" brads, or with a neumatic brad nailer. Then install your casing.
