I would like to set up a simple and low cost intercom for my front door. Do you know of a product that may be useful? Is it possible to hook up a speaker and microphone assembly in and out or to use two phones in this manner?

There are low cost (<$20) wired intercoms. You can use two phones, the tough part the signalling between two units.
