I am buying a home that was built in 1942. The owner, for some reason, within the past 10 years turned a section of the living room in a den that only measures 9x5 sq. feet. I find it useless, and want to tear down the two walls, to open up the living room. I don't think it would be a bearing wall, because it's not part of the original structure. My question is how much would a professional charge for a job like this? And couldn't it be done by a novice? I'm thinking I could handle it myself.....any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you could probably tear it out by yourself. It just depends on how big a mess you want when you are done. A contractor will come it, tear it out, sweep the floor, trim out where the wall was, and be gone.
And, you can enjoy your new room. Depending on how much finish trim will be necessary will depend on the cost and time. It probably is only a few hour project. Oh, yes, he will haul it away also. Inside of your home is not a place to cut corners, expecially wall work. Good Luck
