Is that the same as wood putty? Please don't laugh too much :D Or is there a difference?

Use a woodwise filler it is available in many species. mixed or dry form is available. A filler will be thinner than a putty. The filler is made to be troweled over the floor to fill all the minor imperfections ie small knots, nails holes, gaps between boards etc.

There is a big difference. Wood Putty never hardens, wood filler hardens. If you have 3/4" hardwood floor use the putty, it will alow the floor to expand and contract.

Yes texas there is a big difference between the two and i beg to differ on filler. We trowel fill #2 oak day in and day out and have never had a problem with the normal heat and cooling seasons.
infact i did a repair on a floor i did 5 years ago. Took out some hardwood in front of two doors to put tile in and the floor loked as great now as it did then.

Putty will attract soiling, unless a topcoat is put over it.
