We have oak floors in an older house. They are generally in great shape, but areas are scuffed from chairs and boots and I'd like to just add another coat or two of polyurethane in the problem rooms. Problem is, I don't know whether the original job is oil or water-based. Is the a problem? Is one more forgiving in a case like this than another? I guess my other problem is getting the gloss right since I'd rather not refinish the entire first floor since it doesn't all need it.

Go toyour local hardware store and ask them to borrow the sample that shows the sheens. Take it home and match up the sheen. As far as using oil or water its up to you. The existing floor is cured and if it is in god shape you can screen and coats the floor with either.
Poly will amber the floor where a water based will not.
