Hi,
The house we recently bought has a 12' (8' high) stone wall with a fireplace. The stones are random shaped, from years of use they are dirty & a bit sooty. We will be cleaning them up with some specialty stone cleaner.
One of the problems with the wall is that over the years (50 year old house), people have drilled holes in the motar & there's a bunch of holes. In addition, some of the motor seems to be crumbly, not a lot, but I have a concern that when we clean we may loosen things up. I imagine trying to patch a few spots or fill the holes will leave a different color - anyone have any ideas on how to fill the holes w/out replacing all the motar? Or is that the best solution?
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob,
Sorry no one's gotten back to you on this post, I've been out of pocket for a couple wks. I'd suggest you get a reputable local stone man to take a first hand look at your wall. Better yet get a couple of different perspectives on it. Most masonry walls of whatever type they may be require some periodic maint and 50 yrs would probably fall into that category.
You might also want to try posting your question in the Bricks, Masnory, Concrete forum but I think you'll probably get the same advice. Do post back if you get some local opinions and then want to tackle it yourself.
